EMDR Basic Training

EMDR Basic Training at AllHealth Network

EMDR Basic Training Overview
EMDR is a powerful treatment, clinically demonstrated to be effective with several presenting issues.  It is an evidence based practice for the treatment of PTSD.  EMDR includes components of cognitive, emotional, somatic and narrative modalities and facilitates adaptive resolution of symptoms.

Training consists of 2, 3 day weekends.  These weekends include lecture style learning in the morning, followed by afternoon practicum.  During practicum, trainees will practice in small groups as client and therapist.  It is important to get this experience, as client and therapist, as doing so provides rich opportunities for learning and integrating the material.Part 1 and Part 2 weekends are typically broken up by 3-6 months.

In addition to Part 1 and 2 weekends, trainees are required to complete 10 hours of consultation.  Consultation is most typically provided in a group format, however individual consultation is available upon request and for an adjusted fee.  Group consultation offers a dynamic and engaging opportunity to ask questions about the protocol as well as clients, and to learn from other trainees in their application of EMDR.  Consultation may be provided face to face or via an online forum.

The entire Basic Training curriculum consists of 20 hours of instruction, 20 hours of practicum, and 10 hours of consultation.  Upon completion of all training and consultation, participants will receive a certificate of completion in the mail.

Completing EMDR Basic Training does allow clinicians to practice EMDR with clients, however this is not the same as being Certified in EMDR.  EMDR Certification is an additional level of training and experience.  For more information on this process, please refer to Certification in EMDR.

The importance of self care during training
The EMDR training experience can be inspiring, invigorating, and fulfilling.  It can also be tiring, intense, and triggering.  Therefore, it is important to be fully aware of the process and understand the importance of self care and self efficacy in attending training.

EMDR training consists of three days of trauma training.  Trauma training alone has potential to be triggering.  In addition, participants spend a considerable amount of time practicing EMDR as therapist and client.  As client, it is expected that you use real and slightly disturbing experiences to work with.  This is vital in order for all to have an authentic, rich, and genuine learning experience.  Slightly disturbing experiences have potential to float back to more distressing unresolved experiences.

Due to the nature of training, it is therefore vital that participants have skills to self soothe, regulate, and contain distress.  This is necessary for everyone to have a safe and supportive environment in which to learn.

EMDR training is not recommended if you are currently struggling with acute psychiatric symptoms.  Please take time to care for you before taking EMDR training.

Self care during and after training is strongly encouraged.

Here are some self care tips while completing Basic Training:

  • Eat and stay hydrated.  Snacks will be provided at training however consider your personal needs for staying nourished.
  • Wear comfortable clothes.
  • Avoid stimulating activities after training.  Even a trip to the grocery store can be a bit much.
  • Avoid substances after training.  Your brain will be exhausted and needs time to rest and heal.
  • Plan to get plenty of sleep after training days.
  • It is strongly encouraged, if possible, to take a day for self care after training to rest and restore.
  • Plan something soothing and calming to the nervous system after training such as a massage, yoga, a bath, a walk, etc.
  • Be gentle with yourself.  Have compassion for your process.
  • Seek out your healers if you need additional support.  EMDR training can bring things up, so have their numbers ready.
